Arsenic And Old Lace Essays - Arsenic And Old Lace, Film Noir, Films
Arsenic And Old Lace Beginning with acts such as Abbott and Costello, and episodes of "I Love Lucy," humor is often the result of a misunderstanding. In the movie, "Arsenic and Old Lace," the plot combines murder and insanity. "Arsenic and Old Lace," seemingly outlines a mystery or drama, however with the addition of misunderstanding, it becomes a comedy. The humor is drawn from the characters' relationships with one another as well as the characters themselves, being misunderstood. The movie centers on two sisters, Abby and Martha, and their nephew Mortimer. The misunderstanding lies between the sisters and the townspeople. Abby and Martha are known as sweet, kind, and charitable, however, the town is oblivious to the sisters' hobby of poisoning old men and burying them in their cellar. There is even a misunderstanding with the sisters themselves, as they see nothing wrong with what they do, and make no attempt to hide it. Yet, the humor of the movie is when their nephew, Mortimer, finds the bodies, and is quite flustered to discover how his aunts treat it with such nonchalance. Humor is also found in the misunderstanding between Mortimer and his Brewster family. Throughout the entire movie, Mortimer finds himself ashamed of his Brewster name. He discovers that his aunts keep twelve bodies in the basement. Mortimer also receives a visit from his lunatic brother John, who, like his aunts, murders people. While Mortimer discovers more about his insane family, he still must deal with his brother Theodore, who believes that he is President Roosevelt. Finally, Mortimer commits his brother Theodore along with his aunts to an insane asylum. The humor in this scene is at the very end of the movie when Mortimer finds out from his aunts that he is not really a Brewster, rather a son of a sea boat captain. "Arsenic and Old Lace," is not the typical comedy, yet contains all of the elements necessary to fit into the humor genre. The idea of being misunderstood is one so common; it has appeared in many films, both drama and comedy. "Arsenic and Old Lace" contains a plot that is unique. The movie's ideas alone are common, yet together they mix an unusual blend of humor.

Essay on Design Vehicle
Essay on Design Vehicle Essay on Design Vehicle Every day we travel on a road, have you ever wondered how the roadway is designed to accommodate various kinds of vehicles? The answer is using the right design vehicle. Today Iââ¬â¢m going to introduce the concept of design vehicle. Design vehicle is a conceptual vehicle that is used in the geometry design of roadway. Why we say the design vehicle is conceptual? Because it is not real vehicle, it is actually a group of parameters that describe the general characteristics of vehicles within the same category. Now, let me show you the parameters of a design vehicle that influence roadway design. The first parameter is the height, it influences the vertical clearance. For example, if we design a new bridge cross the road, the height of the bridge should be higher than the design vehicleââ¬â¢s height. The second one is the width: it determines the width of the lane and shoulder. The third one is the length: itââ¬â¢s used to calculate the length of the vehicle storage area, for example, the exclusive left turn lane. And then the configuration: whether the vehicle is single-unit or multiple-units influence its braking distance and turning radius. Is everybody following me so far? OK. Now think about how many different kinds of vehicles are available in the market. You know we have so many vehicle manufacturers and countless choices of cars. Fortunately, almost all the vehicles can be represented by the four types of design vehicles on the picture: the passenger car, the bus, the truck,

Short Stories versus Repression of Desires and Love Research Paper
Short Stories versus Repression of Desires and Love - Research Paper Example Sylviaââ¬â¢s coming to the city has been of great help to the grandmother since she (Sylvia) has been very significant in assisting with the duty chores. In this short story, Jewett attempts to establish the understanding of love as well as repression of desires. After coming to the city, Sylvia has fallen in love with virtually everything and her new (Jewett 4). She loves and values every aspect of the city. Sylviaââ¬â¢s love for the animals and birds in the city prevents her from telling the hunter where the heronââ¬â¢s nest is located until she is given money and a gift of the knife. Keeping the secret of the heronââ¬â¢s nest brings out the idea of repressing the desire of whether to tell the hunter or not. On a different perspective, the hunter is in love with his activity as well as the heron. After discovering that there was a heron (rare bird) seen in the area, the hunter sets out to find it (Jewett 9). His desire or love for the heron makes him bribe Sylvia with a knife and money so that he can be shown the heronââ¬â¢s nest. This short story revolves around the life of Mrs. Hutchinson, a normal housewife, and the annually contested lottery. In this short story, there is a lottery that people participate to win on an annual basis. People participate in the lottery despite the fact that its price is not money but being stoned to death. Amazingly, people still anticipate the lottery irrespective of the end result. Mrs. Hutchinson knows this very well but she could not have fathomed the idea that one day she might be the winner of the lottery. One day, Mrs. Hutchinsonââ¬â¢s family was chosen as the winner of the lottery. All these times, Mrs. Hutchinson did not question the lottery until it reached her turn to be stoned to death. Like many other short stories, The Lottery by Shirley Jackson attempts to establish the love and desires that particular individuals have towards specific aspects of life.
